The ichthyological collections brought together in various parts of New Guinea by staff members of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1954 and 1955 (cf. Boeseman, 1963), contain a series of scorpion-fishes which are here described as a new species, representing a new genus. Cheroscorpaena genus novum Mainly characterized by the, in the Scorpaenidae unique, pectoral fins, which consist of nine rays connected by a membrane, followed ventrally by three entirely detached simple rays of about the same length as the main fins. The type and hitherto only species of this genus is: Cheroscorpaena tridactyla species nova (pl. 1) D XIII. 7 or 8, A III. 6 or 7, Ρ i. 8-i-i-i, V I. 5, C 8 to 10 (branched rays only), gill-rakers on outer branchial arch 7 or 8 +... |

CONTENTS Introduction .................. 207 Description................... 207 Sexual dimorphism................. 211 Relationships .................. 211 A key to the species of the allied genera, Gagata Bleeker etc....... 213 Acknowledgements................. 215 References................... 215 INTRODUCTION Recently four specimens of a species of the genus Gagata Bleeker, from North Koel River at Daltonganj (Chotanagpur, South Bihar), were collected by the author; three of these are females and one is a male. Fortunately, we discovered three more similar specimens, all males, among the unidentified lots in our old collections, bearing the locality label "Delhi", exact locality unknown, while a few more examples were procured from an area adjoining the... |

In 1955, the late Dr. O. Schubart, Director of the Estaçao Esperimental de Biologia at Pirassununga (São Paulo, Brazil) kindly put at my disposal a small collection of fishes which he had assembled in the Mogi-Guassu (river) below the Cachoeira de Emas (Emas falls). Only a series of eight apparently conspecific specimens is discussed here. At first sight, the present specimens appear to closely resemble Pimelodella griffini Eigenmann, especially six examples with a prolonged first soft dorsal ray. However, excepting several minor differences, P. griffini has the dorsal spine prolonged instead of the first ray, while it has the adipose dorsal fin much shorter. Having only two specimens of P. griffini, moreover of dubious identity, available for comparison,... |

The genus Liocranium was established by Ogilby (1903) to contain a new species of scorpion-fish from the east coast of Queensland: L. praepositum. The genus remained monotypic until McCulloch (1921) placed Paracentropogan scorpio Ogilby in it, a species also described from the Queensland coast. Whitley (1933) did not agree, and transferred P. scorpio to a separate new genus Vadesuma. In the meantime Weber (1913) described as Paracentropogon pleurostigma and Paracentropogon cynocephalus two scorpion-fishes from the East Indies. These two species, however, were not well placed in Paracentropogon, and therefore De Beaufort (1949) created the genus Sibogapistus for them. Apart from McCulloch's (1921) remark that: "Paracentropogon cynocephalus Weber is perhaps... |

Boeseman, M.. |
In his valuable report on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, Eigenmann (1912, pp. 64-73) gave a list of the species, together with comparable lists on the freshwater fishes of the adjacent regions. In sharp contrast with the number of 266 species reported from the Essequibo area only, the total amount of Surinam species proved to be but 118! Although since Eigenmann compiled these lists some more species have been reported from Surinam, the general situation has remained essentially the same, clearly showing the backward state of ichthyological research in this area. A possibility to improve our knowledge of this subject came when during the last four years the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie received several more or less extensive collections... |

INTRODUCTION Difficulties with the identification of some West-Indian Belonidae and an investigation into the merits of the generic name Strongylura as against Tylosurus led to a revision of the Belonidae, the result of which is published here. As will be seen on the following pages, this revision is by no means final; many problems remain to be solved, much synonymy given here is doubtful, lack of material prevented me from investigating the possible presence of slight geographic variation in the widely distributed species; some apparently valid species are left out altogether (I listed their names on p. 5) because no material has been available, and other names remain doubtful as it has not been possible to examine the type specimens. There is also the... |

INTRODUCTION The present paper forms the continuation of a series pretending to cover at least most of the Surinam representatives of loricariid armoured catfishes (for earlier papers, see Boeseman, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1974), but for various reasons it is less extensive in scope than its forerunners. The main reasons are that, (1) it seems unnecessary to repeat the general information provided in the earlier papers, especially since the employed methods, the provided measurements (see fig. 1), and the localities (fig. 2) or habitats are the same, or at least similar (exceptions: measurements and counts up to "caudal base" in fact are up to the end of the last, small scute of the lateral series, while in some of tables, to the total (or axial) length, the... |

During recent research on a small number of freshwater sharks from Lake Jamoer, Netherlands New Guinea, I was struck by the fact that the consulted literature clearly showed a deplorable lack of agreement in the choice of a generic name for the species belonging to the genus Carcharhinus Blainville, sensu Bigelow & Schroeder (1948, p. 320), even among recent authors. Though by far the majority of contemporary authors now seem to have accepted Carcharhinus, a decreasing number still uses either Galeolamna Owen or Eulamia Gill, or occasionally even Carcharias Cuvier. In the restricted list of literature given at the end of the present paper, eleven of the post-1900 authors finally used Carcharhinus (or Carcharinus), only two used Galeolamna (Whitley,... |

ABSTRACT The inshore shoals of basking sharks that appear in spring off the western seabord of Europe have been variously claimed to be part of a seasonal south to north migration, or local, perhaps nuptial, aggregations. The decline in the catches of the Achill Island Fishery in the last decade suggests that the size of the shoals has diminished there. Size/frequency analysis of available records shows a midsummer peak of specimens with a mean length of 3.09 m and a mid-winter peak at 3.52 m; the difference is significant and is ascribed to growth. From this value, coupled with the recorded maximum and minimum sizes, a hypothetical asymptotic growth-curve is calculated. Comparison of this age/length relationship with the observed relationship between... |

At the end of November 1960, the Leiden Museum received an interesting collection of animals, mostly fishes, from the Niger delta. All specimens were collected by Mr. H. J. G. Beets, at the time employed by Shell B.P. — Delta Investigations, during the period May to August 1960, and in the region between Port Harcourt and Brass. Unfortunately, owing to lack of time, the separate specimens or lots were not labelled, but the collecting localities are limited in number and restricted to only the eastern part of the delta. The fish collection, consisting of 130 specimens, proved to belong to 51 species, some of which gave occasion for a reexamination and comparison of Bleeker and Steindachner types in the Leiden Museum collection. Collecting localities and... |

The faunal diversity of Lake Tanganyika, with its fish species flocks and its importance as a cradle and reservoir of ancient fish lineages seeding other radiations, has generated a considerable scientific interest in the fields of evolution and biodiversity. The Tropheini, an endemic Tanganyikan cichlid tribe, fills a peculiar phylogenetic position, being closely related to the haplochromine radiations of Lakes Malawi and Victoria. Several problems remain regarding their genus-level classification. For example, the monotypic genus Interochromis is phylogenetically nested within Petrochromis; its only representative, I. loocki, has often been reclassified. As monogenean flatworms are useful markers for fish phylogeny and taxonomy, the monogenean fauna of... |

I propose in this part of my catalogue of the Solariidae to deal only with the genus Solarium s.s. and to reserve the remaining genera of this family for the next publication. For the division of the Solariidae in genera I followed Thiele's Handbuch der systematischen Weichtierkunde, also as far as concerns the names. Not only did I mention those species of which we possess specimens in the Leiden Museum, but, like in the former catalogues, I have included also, as far as possible, those species of which no material is present in our collections. The list is composed on the same lines as my previous ones. Of all species of which we possess material a list is given of the specimens, stating: 1) the letter which indicates specimens from the same locality and... |
